Opening sequences are there to generaly give the onlooker a general idea of what the film is about and intise them into to watching the film. In the film Fight club the camera is constantly moving around in a variety of directions, the backing music and mis en scene is the same right through the opening sequence this is turn helps to create a build up and add suspence.
